Welcome to Pam's PARCC Points for District 86! I'll use this blog to assist you in getting yourself and your students ready for PARCC testing. Need clarification about PARCC? Visit their "About" page. PARCC is composed of two required summative assessments. The “Performance-Based Assessment” (PBA) will be administered in March and the “End-of-Year Assessment” (EOY) will be administered in May. The Speaking and Listening Assessment will not be available until the 2015-16 school year. The PBA component will focus on writing effectively when analyzing text (ELA). The three sections (Literary Analysis, Research Simulation and Narrative Writing) each require students to write (type) an essay. The two math portions will focus on applying skills, concepts, and understanding multistep problems that require abstract reasoning, precision, perseverance, and strategic use of tools. The EOY component will ask students to demonstrate their acquired skills and knowledge by answering machine-scorable questions (two sections each for ELA and Math). More details about PARCC are available in this brief presentation: PARCC Intro Some of my blog "points" will be obviously related to PARCC, while others may be less obvious and look more like the New Illinois State Standards implementation or simply basic tech skills for students. The tech skills are foundational for skills necessary for PARCC and teaching/learning the Illinois State Standards is the very reason for the PARCC assessment. Tech Tips (To sharpen those "Points"!) The beginning of the school year brings with it some basic housekeeping tasks, including orienting students to use of the lab, making sure logins work properly and having Internet safety discussions. Now is a good time to discuss safe use of the lab (rules are posted) as well as computer hygiene. (Hand sanitizer is available!) District library aides can provide information about student logins and passwords. They also have an age appropriate Internet Safety video to use with students. Once those housekeeping tasks are completed, most grade levels "part ways". My goal is that we use the recommended lesson scope and sequence (view by choosing a grade level) on my web site, so all district students will cover our Technology Skills Matrix that is standards-based and foundational for PARCC success!
